Kumquats

Two things interest me about this little, healthy citrus fruit. The etymology of the name and the curious defense growth that appears at the base of the plant when it has fruit (see image below). Don't you think it remarkable that the Chinese "golden orange" sets up such a defense to protect itself? Kind of a "Great Wall" of thorns.
